What is seb derm?

  • Seb derm is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects oily areas of the skin.
  • The exact cause is not known, but it is related to a combination of skin barrier disruption, oil gland activity, and yeast.
  • Often mistaken for dandruff, it usually appears on the scalp, ears, eyebrows, nose, face, neck, back, or chest.
  • Seb derm tends to come and go over time with flare-ups.
  • Stress, changes in hormones, and cold, dry weather can all trigger seb derm.
Over 10 million people in the US are living with seb derm

What to know about over-the-counter treatments

Some of your clients may turn to medicated shampoos or other over-the-counter options to try to find relief, but they can cause dryness or damage hair color. Or you might have clients with hair textures or styles that make frequent shampooing impractical.
